Rolling Down the River

Words and music: Jack Forbes
Audio: the London Sea Shanty Collective at Greenland Dock

A modern Thames shanty by the great Southend singer Jack Forbes, a stalwart of the Hoy Shanty Crew and the Hoy at Anchor Folk Club, who died in 2016. He wrote this in 1982 for a BBC radio ballad, Wind Over Tilbury, about the switch from the old labour-intensive London docks to mechanised container ports and the upheaval it caused.
